Air Sealing Your House

Air Sealing

By trying to eliminate the amount of air that leaks in and out of your home is an energy-saving way to cut down on your heating and cooling costs and to get better comfort in your home, and to create a healthier indoor air environment. Adding caulk and weather stripping are two ways to help with air leakage in your home and gives you a quick return on investment, caulk is used for cracks and openings where air leak in, such as around door and window frames. If you have outdoor water faucets you can caulk around those and any other penetrations in the side of your home.

Air Leakage and Filtration

Air leakage will happen when the air outside enters your home and the inside conditioned air leaves your house uncontrollably through cracks and penetrations in your home, you cannot rely on air leakage for ventilation of your home. When it is cold and windy outside too much air will enter your home and when it is warmer and not as windy not enough air that is required, will enter your home given you poor indoor air quality. Air leakage and infiltration also will give you moisture problems that can affect your homes structure and the health of the occupants of your home a benefit to sealing the cracks and openings will reduce the drafts and cold spots in your home giving you a much better comfortable living area.

Detecting Air Leakage

The only accurate way to measure air leakage in your home is to hire a qualified HVAC technician to conduct a blower door test this will pressurize your home and will show the location of many leaks this will also determine if your home needs more insulation.

You can check for basic outside your home leaks yourself without a blower door test.
